Hey it doesn't hurt to ramp up new business. I am busy trying to finish Gadget but I am only working on the documentation now. I will be finished and ready for another project until I am ready to work on the new version of Gadget. Besides this thread seemed that it was getting a little off the subject and I didn't want Andy to think that we are not serious business men/women here;) hehehehehehe So my offer still stands Andy. _________________ Home of

Looks like I missed out on a good flame here. Just to clarify a few things. The speed of a Delphi EXE, a C++ EXE and a VDS EXE are roughly about the same. Delphi and C++ out perform VDS slighly by half a second when it comes to high math calculations or performance line for line. HALF A SECOND not seconds. So in actuality c++ or delphi are not that much better in the speed arena then vds is.
As for the ability to have more defined and precise code as well as an enormous selection of custom controls, yes you can do more with delphi and c++. But this is the beauty of VDS, most of us don't need complicated things within VDS, we just need math functions, graphical controls, ability to call vds dlls, registry, compile to exe, etc.
I personally now use Delphi almost exclusively. But still I rely on VDS and use it almost weekly to write little applications. Also as for the ability for VDS applications to compete with other programs, well I for one can say that my two original programs PCMEDIK + THROTTLE which were originally created in VDS sold well over $40,000 worth of copies within the first 8 months, so obviously VDS exe's have some market out there. The two programs are now written in DELPHI as it was first an experiment to see if I could convert over the programs however I eventually grew more to Delphi as my main programing language.
If you use VDS great, if you like DELPHI more thats also great. Choose the tool that you think is best for you. If you really need alot of customization then I suggest moving to another language. But if you don't need all the complication then stick with VDS and churn out your code as you wish. VDS is constantly being updated and there are always new things being added. The company which owns vds isn't a mulit million dollar company so they really do support their products and listen to the users. Trust me I talk with the CEO of Sade often and he himself uses VDS daily and almost never stops talking about it (believe me, he never shuts up --- ONLY KIDDING).
It's not really what the programing language can do, it's what YOU do with it. Code your apps, try to be as professional as possible and it won't matter what language you are using. There are always workarounds and ways to accomplish something if really need be. |

LOL, ya gotta be kiddin'....
VDS is a SNAIL on complex math functions. If ya don't
believe me try this code:
http://www.vdsworld.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=358
I tried it with my DRAW.DLL, then with all graphic
routines completely removed, and it made no visible
difference in the calculation speed. VDS is SUPER slow
doing math compared to C/C++.
You would never have seen a Wolfenstein 3D game
(the original) if VDS was all they had to work with...

Actually Mac,
If you use Gadget and the math routines in the msvcrt.dll you could achieve just about the same speed as any C/C++ programs as far as Math is concerned, because Gadget is written in one of the fastest C compiliers on the internet and the DLL calling code was written with Inline Assembly. The only way to get faster is to goto full Assembly or build your math routines with inline Assembly and link them. If you look in my Loadlib.dsc example you will see how I use the Sine function from the msvcrt.dll and you can see the difference in using the @fsin() VDS function and the sin() C function. You guys kill me with all this which language is faster stuff...hehehehehehe I really think that if it is just speed you want then you should learn a non-interpreted langauge like Assembly, C/C++, or Delphi. All of these are comprable as far as speed goes with Assembly being the faster of the 3 but I do belive that VDS is as fast if not faster than most other interpreted languages like VB, Java, and a few others.... The problem is the need for a runtime dll to interpret the code which slows the processing of the code but with todays processors I really don't think that is too much trouble. _________________ Home of

Hey mindpower,
The speed problem with VDS is that it's a scripting language.
Each line of VDS code must be read and run thru the interpreter
before the next one is read and run thru the interpreter etc. etc.
Similiar to a DOS batch file (except it can continue after starting
another program, starting a sound file playing, etc.).
So, no matter how fast your DLL calls are, VDS is still the
bottleneck. If ya don't think so, write a VDS program using
GADGET.DLL (which seems to be a great DLL, BTW), where
VDS calls multiple math functions (such as the raycasting demo
I mentioned), then write a program to do the same thing in
straight C/C++. There's no comparison.
Of course, if a complex routine (such as raycasting) is run
completely within the DLL, it'd speed things up considerably.
But then you really have a C/C++ program that's just run
from a VDS shell...
BTW, don't take this as a bash on VDS, it's great for what it
was designed for. Super speed's just not a strong point.

Oh no Mac,
First let me say that I agree with you 110%. Second I know exactly what slows VDS down but it is still as fast as Java, perl, TCL/TK, Visual Basic and other interpreted languages. All I am saying is that if you are writing a VDS program that needs a little extra boost then take the routines that require the speed and put them into a DLL built with a faster language and use VDS just like most people use Visual Basic just as a GUI front end for it's easier to build a GUI front end in VDS than to build the same interface in other Languages. _________________ Home of

Agreed.

See original message!
Over the last 20-24 months I have managed to cope with doing all the programming myself, but I find that I work too many hours and I now have a project that I just do not have enough time to complete!
Urgent assistence required.
If there is anybody out there who needs to earn additional income, or indeed is looking for full-time employment, please let me know.
I am not interested in discussions about whether VDS is the best language to develop in. All of my projects have been developed in VDS and I find it adequate for the tasks I am asked to complete. _________________ Andrew GRAY

some extra relevant information would be helpful
even if you send it as a pm to interested parties such as myself

Hi All, I have sent the below to those who expressed an interest (without the links blanked out)
You can get an example of a version of an application dating from about 2 months ago at [Link goes here], which is about 5MB. The install password is 'Tiller Road', and you'd be very welcome to call me on +44 20 798 798 14 to discuss other aspects of the install. Once installed You'll have to run a key, which you can download from [Link goes here] (designed to be compiled in VDS4.5 unless you add the #DEFINE statements for VDSDB.DLL etc.,) that allows you to run the application for about a month. These keys are generated automatically in the office each week and use 4.5 to compile them. Your Username & password for the application is 'USERNAME' and 'PASSWORD' respectively. Case is important! In the real world we do weekly keys for authorised users. These weekly keys also contain new fields, revised programming etc., that we have agreed with the underwriter.
The new project is very similar, but for another Underwriter and features a few more products. The application will run on about 50 sites nationwide.
If you would like to assist for an appropriate fee, I can send you the VDS code for the above, once you have signed an NDA, to have a look at. What I would envisage I would need you for is to act as a consultant that would look at my code and suggest better ways of doing things, or indeed write code!
