Has anybody tried to use VDS under Linux with Wine or any other emulator besides VMWare. I tried it briefly with the latest version of Wine but it does not seem possible.
Other than loading a full blown Emulator such as VMWare I dont see any way to do it currently. Posting just because im curious to see if anybody runs it under any of the Windows emulators for Linux.

I guess the point is that the majority of our development is done under Linux and I use VDS to write clients that Interface with our Linux servers primarily. I was just curious since all of our workstations (except 1) run Linux.

Has ANYBODY ever run an emulator with a VDS script? We primarily focus on windows development (RAD) using VDS so what our clients are asking for is the ability to run VDS scripts (applications) under emulation on whatever platform (mac, linux) etc. I know VMWare works but im thinking more of a scaled down emulator. Is this possible? Develop once and run on 2 or 3 different platforms via emulation.

Webdaddy,
Yes people have ran VDS under wine but with mixed results. If I understand them correctly some Controls and a few other things did not work or only halfway worked. I would think that most of the controls that VDS has should work. I don't think the IDE works at all under Wine. Only your Exe's. I have begged and begged for a version of VDS that would run natively under Linux even if it was command line only but to no avail The owners feel there is not enough profit in building a version of VDS for Linux to make it worth their efforts. Also I am not sure of the legal aspects of building my own version of VDS for Linux since VDS is a perpriority language for the exclusive use of CR. Anyway I have asked Jules about it and he says he has built a simple version of VDS for Linux but his hands are tied as far as it's distro since it is the property of CR. Besides I don't think I would want an Open Source version of VDS. I have offered to pay for a custom version just for Linux but they still will not since that would mean they would have to support the custom versions as well.
Anyway as far as I know Garrett says that VDS Exe's will run but the IDE definately will not. I say try it and see how far you get.

They dont support the windows version of their product. I have been waiting months for an answer to 2 questions that I have posted. I love the product but they seriously suck at supporting it. I cant believe they are still in business when they treat their customer this way.

Just my 2 cent rant

I have VDS 5 working Perfectly in Wine and it always worked perfectly in VMWare because that is essentially windows. I had to get the newest version of Wine but I now am able to write, test and compile in Linux without issues. Bye Bye Windows holdover machine...

That is awesome news... Webdaddy can you post the steps that you took to make this work... I know you installed the latest version of Wine but what distro of Linux are you using and stuff like that would be nice to know. Again this is really cool.

|
|
Here's the information.
1. I downloaded DSL (Damn Small Linux) from the following site.
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/
2. I installed the operating system to my machine (Old Laptop) and made sure that I could boot the operating system.
3. Then I ran the "MyDSL Browser". What this does is provide a list of available software for MyDSL. If you are familiar with Linux this is similar to YUM or up2date or apt-get utilities that allow you to install additional packages and takes care of the dependancies after you have installed the LINUX/UNIX OS. I installed Wine from the MyDSL application.
4. Once installed you must run Wine one time as root to ensure that you have a /root/.wine/drive_c directory avalable.
5. I copied the VDS (Im running version 5.01) exe to the system to the /root/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/ directory so that I could install it.
I run wine as root on this system but have not tried as a user.
after cd'ing to the correct directory with this
#cd /root/.wine/drive_c
I then launch the installer and install normally
#wine vdssetup.exe
The install is normal with no issues.
I then install my license key with
#wine 3563554.exe
then I simply run it with
#wine vds.exe
And it works. I have compiled my exe's on this system and copied them to Windows and they work perfectly. I have also run them under wine on this system and have not had any problems. Im sure some of the controls will not work in Linux as has been mentioned before but at least I can compile and test small script in linux without any issues.
If this keeps up my Windows machine will once again be retired.

Your are awesome... Yes I am familiar with DSL and have used it on a thumb drive. I will have to give it a go and report back here. I may try it under Ubuntu as well.

It works under Ubuntu also as my wife uses that on her desktop. It runs just as well and compiles work, etc.

Yep I have it working under Ubuntu However I have not been able to get all the GadgetX demos working yet but I will keep trying. It seems that Wine's ActiveX support is not complete but all the Win32 API demos work without issue so far.
