Darn It... I guess I will have to send CR another message. Honestly this is getting to be a pain. No one is that dang busy that they cannot take care of their customers. Especially paying customers.

Tdk I will try and contact them again for ya.

I really want to buy the Internet Suite from Commercial Research, but after reading the non-support and contact from CR about other users trying to buy, im concerned that if i ordered and paid for the product the activation would not arrive any time soon.

This is really getting old, no response from CR, no VDS6, i've been holding on and holding on, but technology is moving so fast, i'm wondering if i should leave VDS completly and goto another language that is better supported in terms of new versions from the the authors.

Don't get me wrong the support at VDS World is and always has been excellent but maybe its time to move on ??

Nathan,
I guess that is up to you.

Here is some things to think about

  1. Invested time & money into VDS.
  2. Learning curve of other languages.
  3. Cost of the other languges.

I have been using VDS for a very long time now and I will have to say eventhough CR is very slow in their delivery they always deliver. I have not known them not to deliver.

Transitioning to another langauge isn't a bad idea. Moving over to c# would definately be a good idea; it's fairly easy to learn but remember the .net runtimes required are quite large to distribute and aren't on every computer. Take a look at Microsoft Visual C# Express, it's completely free of charge and it's unlikely Microsoft is going to drop support. Microsoft is really trying to push c#.

Yes, but C# is not VDS. The arguments for using VDS rather than C# are the same as those for using VDS instead of Delphi (which I always do where possible.) VDS is still the quickest way to get some small utility up and running, as long as you don't need to use the Windows API and are happy to use the window controls that are provided by VDS.

Which makes it all the more tragic that VDS is being killed off by a lack of interest from the owner of it. The number of times I have been tempted just to upload the VDS 6 setup file here, with a generic activation key...

I am pretty sure that I still have a copy of the key generator for the VDS extensions somewhere, so if anyone can prove they paid for a copy of one of the DLLs and have simply not received a key from CR, I can probably generate one for you. This is not something I would normally offer to do, and I hope Prakash does not consider it out of line, but in the circumstances I think it is fair and reasonable.

I would suggest that they just sell VDS to someone else that would have interest in it and support it. When I pushed VDS to the company I work for 2 years ago, they were satisfied with it. But I eventually told them that VDS was not going to be updated very soon and they needed extra features. So they bought Delphi instead. And now my I have a guy in my team that builds automation tools using Delphi instead of VDS. The company would have probably both VDS 6 last year. But it's too late now. VDS is out. Very frustrating to push a product you like and then look a bit stupid cause the product is not really supported anymore (lack of updates).

I myself is using a different language now. Probably won't upgrade to VDS 6.

Again, CR should really consider selling VDS to someone else that would support it better. But i do know that there has been issues to prevent this release in the past

Thanks,

If I could get my hands on the VDS 6 setup file and a working license key I'd happily send CR some money (the amount that VDS 5 sells for).

It's so frustrating when I've been waiting, and waiting, to buy a copy of VDS 6... but CR doesn't seem to want to sell it!

Hi All,
Actually these are the reasons I wrote my GadgetX.dll so I would not have to wait for CR to gain access to the newer technology. I have to agree with Jules though. I don't care what other computer language you use you still cannot build programs as fast and stable as you can with VDS. I think what happens is that VDS users just out grow the language and they start needing more and more abilities but CR cannot keep up with the demand without breaking the premise of the language itself. VDS is simple to write and use and the more advanced features added to the language the more complex it gets to use. If you want more power then you will need to either look towards External DLL's or look at the option of switching languages. Since I am a C programmer VDS works well with me because it is very cumbersome to build completely working GUI interfaces with C. So I combined the abilities of VDS with the abilities of C in my GadgetX.dll... I guess what I am saying here is that CR could add all the latest and greatest technology to VDS but then would VDS still be easy to use? I think not... In most cases many would be programmers get lost in all the "features" of the language and get discouraged and give up programming all together. If it had not been for VDS I may have been one of them. Instead I look at VDS for what it is and learned it's limitations and have either worked around them or tried to enhance the language through external means. I think that is the approach you should take to this language. In some way I wish the language was still the same as it was in 2.5 where it was really really simple but in other ways I am glad that it has changed into what it is today. Still simple but with a few more widgets to play with.

I seem to recall that someone in this forum offered to buy it some time ago, and was quoted a ludicrous amount of money for the software. I was particularly p****d off because I sold VDS to them as a going concern for something like $5,000 plus a small percentage of sales over the next two years, which did not amount to much (not that I could verify the actual sales.) However, at the time I needed the time VDS support was taking more than the money.

For more sentimental reasons than anything I would quite like to get VDS back but I am not in a position to pay anything. Even if they gave it back to me for nothing I don't really think it would be a good business decision for me to take it back even if they gave the rights back to me for free. I think a program like VDS needs more or less a full time developer/support and I very much doubt that it now sells many copies at all. Most sharewares don't sell many copies these days and if VDS did, wouldn't CR be keen to get the new version out instead of not caring about it?

I think the only possible way forward would be if CR could be persuaded to give the rights free of charge to VDSWorld to release VDS 6 as a free, open source project. They could then just forget about VDS which is obviously too much trouble for them to spend any time on. I would upload the binary and source files, so they would not need to bother about doing anything. They could close down dialogscript.com if they don't want to give it away - we don't need it.

There are probably enough people here with Delphi experience to contribute to maintenance and ongoing development if they wanted to. However, I do want to make it clear that I don't want a lead role in any of this. I have a business to run and I don't have time to spend on non-commercial projects at the moment. So if anyone does want to try to progress this idea, there would need to be a project team that would do all the work, and I would simply take a sort of consultancy role to help get things going.

I would love to see some sort of solution to all of this. VDS fits my needs perfectly and I would love to have it grow and prosper.

I am not in a position to help with Delphi development, unfortunately, but I would be an enthusiastic beta tester!

I have had interest in purchasing VDS as well, but from what I understand, the owner is not interested in that - is that correct?
