Poor Dan Rather Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad , just mentioning his name gets me upset Smile

Computer usage is safe for most kids but there are alot of strange people on the internet that can influence your kids. Without proper supervision kids can get into a whole set of problems on the internet. Remember the computer is interative with real people when it is connected to the internet.

As to the comment that having a kid sit at a computer it is better then kids playing violent video games, that really depends. I don't believe video games harm children any more then violent tv/movies do. Again it's more media over sensationalism that suggests video games cause children to go out and cause more violence, they said the same thing about comic books back in the day (before I was born). I personally believe if the parents spent time with their children explaining what happens in videogames/tv/movies is not realistic and is only an imaginary story most kids would understand that. Most of these kids that go committing murders and other violent crimes typically are influenced by peers or have other emotional problems, but the media tries to easily explain it in one to two words - typically blamming it on video games.

Ok we've completely went from how blogging is evil to Dan Rather Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad to violent video games. I certainly hope this forum didn't just turn into a generic blog, I certanly hope.

Hi PGWARE,

I never stated that kids go out and commit violent acts due to video-game influence. In essence, what I meant (and mean) is that kids spend way too much time playing such games (and that the violence is in no way beneficial).

To add on to what I posted earlier, we all know that many parents have trouble getting their children to read books. At least interactive computing gets children reading more than kids in my day; I know this for a fact. Furthermore, I feel that socializing on the Internet is a definite outlet for people (not just kids). Not much different than visiting a "shrink" really.

Yeppers, the Internet can be a dangerous place for all involved and should be used with proper caution. Also, the Internet should be used like anything else: In Moderation.

Cheers,

- Boo

I can see violent video games as a way to teach children that in our world there is killing and violence. That not everything is as perfect as we like and there are people willing to commit crimes to achieve certain goals they want (money, drugs, revenge, etc).

Most of these games also show that violent crimes have consequences, for instance Grand Theft Auto - if you commit too many crimes the police come out and try to arrest you. In games like Halo you go shooting aliens and try to kill them, obviously you also have the ability to be killed in the game - showing them the ultimate consequence to killing; that is being killed yourself.

It's a way to teach children about mortality without having to truely see it for themselves. Maybe it gives them an understanding about how short life is. Or maybe their just bored and want to blow away some aliens Smile

So the message is: It's okay to commit SOME crimes in life, but just not TOO MANY?

Sorry, just had to reply! Wink

Let's face it... Violent games are fun. However, they sure do waste a lot of time. I don't think a kid has to play 20+ hours of games a week to learn about violence in the world. A single instance of the game should suffice. (But they will play over and over--'cause it's fun.)

Cheers,

- Boo
