Just to let some of you in on how much work goes into a majority of the
extensions listed here at VDS World.

SSMenu.Dll - To date approx. 90 hours
SSTreeVw.dll - To date approx. 60 hours

That is just the time to write the code for the dlls. That is not including
writing and testing sample scripts and writing a comprehensive help file.

So all in all between these two extensions I have probably invested close
to about 200 hours. Shocked

I can imagine, it takes a good deal of time to get those extensions working, then getting examples ready then putting together the help file. The real pain is getting the code to function 100% and debugging problems.

It's a whole lot harder to debug a dll than an exe. Wink
A debugger doesn't do a bit of good for a dll.

Right, it's typically trial and error to see where the fault is. Using messageboxes to see where problems are occuring is helpful to. You mostly just have to go through and try to see what is happenign then reboot Windows when it crashes or causes exception faults Smile

You hit the nail right on the head, but this is stuff that you already know Wink

Or an EXE if ya use a command line (C) compiler as I do.
PK is right though - if it weren't for message boxes I'd be
outta luck. Wink

I do have a few simple error routines I use frequently,
such as a number test and string test - they still use
message boxes though, routines just makes calling
'em simpler... Wink

Cheers, Mac Smile

If you write the DLL using a recent version of Delphi you can debug a DLL. I do this quite a lot.

Yeah, but then I have to learn another programming language. I have a
hard enough time keeping up with C/C++ and HTML/JavaScript/CSS and
then VDS on top of that. Confused

Another drawback to that is the output size of Delphi's executables. They
aren't near as small as the .dlls, etc. that I write in C and compile with
LCC. Wink

Strangley enough though, the dlls that I write for VDS, I can actually use
with any other C/C++ program if I want.

Actually you can compile a delphi executable down to under 20 kb as long as you do not use any of the delphi vcl's or units. Most executables use vcl/units to make programming easier for the developer though. But you can use the direct Windows api if you wish and make the program very small. You can also use assembly language in Delphi too Smile
