Mac, when I was talking about popup-blockers, I was talking about similiar
applications (using the same kind of idea), not cloning VDS DLLs or VDS
itself for that matter.

I think you'll find that there are no "exact" VDS DLL clones either,
they're prolly just "similiar" too (actually I don't even know what
specific DLL(s) you guys are upset over).

As far as I know, no one is "cloning" VDS either (at the moment
anyway), although they would have a legal right to make a similiar
product - even if some of us might not agree with it. Wink

I don't know what is so hard to accept about the fact that we need to

I'm kinda hard pressed to see why DLL competition is undermining
Commercial Research in any way - they're the ones that opened
VDS 5 up to using practically any DLL there is. Confused

Also, indeed "reverse engineering" is copying something, but changing just
a few things to avoid copyright infringement:

Quote:
Reverse engineering (RE) is the process of taking something (a device, an electrical component, a software program, etc.) apart and analyzing its workings in detail, and after that to reconstruct a new device/program/etc. that does the same thing
....

Reverse-engineering is commonly done to avoid copyrights on desired functionality, and may be used for avoiding patent law, though this is a bit risky: patents apply to the functionality, not a specific implementation of it.

Finally! You are correct - "reverse engineering" is taking something
apart (de-compiling, etc.) and using the exact same methods (or
practically so) to achieve the exact results. It is NOT observing the
results and creating an app to do something "similiar" with your
own code (and once again the "patent" remarks don't apply to
software).

Anyway, I've said enough - hopefully we can disagree without
being disagreeable. Wink

Cheers, Mac Smile

RichEdit DSU has been taken down.
The dsu is no more available for download. I don't encourage use of any downloaded copies in your fresh projects either
Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed Sorry if anyone was hurt. Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed
I refrain from publishing DSUs hereafter.
I want to make it very clear however that this DSU was borne completely from the documentaton available in the Platform SDK and at MSDN and NOT any reversing. I am taking this action just to keep everyone here happy that's all.

CodeScript I was not refering to your richedit dsu in anwyay so please go ahead and put it back up.

>> On other subjects.

We can get into symantecs on what reverse engineering is, however either way it's unethical to download someones software for the purpose of duplicating it as one of your objectives.

I have no problem with seeing how a program works, but debugging it to the point you try to find how it is exactly operates is another thing all together.

I am in no way refering to any vds clones or anything of the such. Mac's vds clone is not a case of reverse engineering from what he has told me since he did not debug the vds software, but only has a similar syntax. But I still think it somewhat unethical to copy the vds software.

I am refering to other people when I speak of specific case of reverse engineering on this site.

No One asked/forced me to remove the DSU.
But I wished the apple of discord not be there.
Hope I/we don't have more of them here(ħafter) Wink

Just to clarify - I am no longer developing a "VDS clone".
VDS syntax is no longer used, and previous demos that
did have been removed. Wink

Mac, I take offense to this. I am not stupid, which you are implying. Just
remember that being a moderator also carries a responsibility to treat
everyone with kindness, even if you may not want to. I have not blatantly
disrespected you before.

I don't want to start anything, so let's not argue about this. Just my feelings.

Best regards,

FreezingFire

P.S. CodeScript: Don't worry - I don't think people are talking about your
Richedit DSU. Smile

Hey FF,

OK, this really surprised me - I did not mean any disrespect,
nor did I imply that you are stupid. Confused

Notice I did NOT say "Finally you are correct". The "Finally!"
(by itself) was relief that someone actually posted the correct
definition of "reverse engineering". "You are correct" meant
that I thought the definition you posted was correct (I assume
you think it was or ya wouldn't have posted it?).

You should know by now that I'm not in the habit of insulting
people - so if/when you think I do, please consider that perhaps
you missed the meaning of my post. Thanks for telling me
though, I'll try to be more aware of how my posts may be
perceived in the future. Wink

Cheers, Mac Smile

CodeScript in no way was I refering to your richedit.dsu. In fact you've helped me add alot of features to the vdsobj richedit - such as zoom in/out, many api's. Also helped me add the transparent background to the IMAGE component.

Also I've had communication with you on MSN about your richedit and other dll's, we've worked with each other so I don't think removing your richedit dsu is necessary.

This thread is getting worn down and people are starting to misunderstand
each other, so to avoid more misunderstandings etc., it will be locked for
awhile.
