WinRar is my first choice
Easy to use and better compression is a winning combination...

I dont like WinZip or WinAce.

7zip was better by 370Kb than WinRar
compressing my 30MB Icon collection (9527 icons) to 5,97 MB
Winrar score was 6,32MB

Not if the recipient is one of the 99% of people who not only don't have a program that can deal with rar archives, but have never even heard of it. (I have enough problems with people who don't know what to do with zip files.)

Who cares if the compression is a few precent better anyway? Modern hard drives have more space than I could fill up in a lifetime.

If your total package size is under 5 MB I think it's fine to use any compression method or none at all, since most people have harddrives which are typically a couple gigs and are running faster then a 14.4 kb net connection.

I agree with Jules, those last few kB won't matter to most users.
I'm not sure if they still have it but PowerArchiver had a free version which was able to compress and decompress most known formats including ZIP, RAR and CAB. It looks as an exact WinZip clone.
Might be of interest for some!

Very Happy

I have the last free version of PowerArchiver and I love it. Have been
using PowerArchiver for years. I can prolly upload a copy to my web site
for others to download. At the moment, I'm still working on a .zip dll for
VDS, but it will be some time before it is released.

Yippie!!!
A zip dll for VDS, I like that.
I now use vdszip.dll but as mention before it refuses to zip the folder structure, otherwise it works okay.
A new zip dll which has all the zip features functioning correctly is more than welcome!
Good luck, hope you get the job done.
