VDS won't run on it. _________________ The Tech Pro

On the other hand, if ReactOS ever gets anywhere, VDS will I'm sure
run on that. Maybe not 100%, but good enough to get some things
done.

Solaris is really a server operating system. I don't think there is even a complicated GUI for it.
If you are looking for a gui operating system. A very good one is RedHat Fedora (Linux):

Ok guys,
Some of the statements here are not 100% accurate. First of all Yes Solaris has a GUI API interface. It actually has most of those you would find with Linux. Solaris has XWindows... Well it's idea of XWindows. Next since WINE will install on Solaris you can run Win32 Applications. Now I remember a long time ago someone say that they got a VDS program to work under WINE. The IDE will not work they said but many standard programs would if you kept it to the bare minimum. I don't remember if you could have dialogs or not? Third Solaris comes in multiple varities (Enterprise, Server, and Workstations) so pick your poison. Finally I know that Jules has built a VDS runtime for Linux before the only problem is that him and the owners of VDS do not think they could make enough money off of such a version of VDS. Also there is the question of which GUI API should they support. Well I think if VDS was made for Solaris that would be really cool considering that many Servers are Solaris and could use good utilities to monitor the machines.
I am currently in the need for a good CPU performance monitor for Solaris that is simple to use and can be kicked off from the command line and log at specified intervals say every 5 seconds the % of CPU being used just like Windows Perfmon does for Windows Servers. _________________ Home of

If VDS is able to run on Linux by recompiling the runtime file, maybe it can also be possible to let the runtime file use external source code files, which it can execute on the fly (just like interpreters like PHP do). This way, you can have the strenght of VDS and the simplicity of PHP bounded together. This way, "normal" people can also create server monitoring tools like you said, without the need of (big) programming languages like C to let it work in Linux. I don't know how good the ported runtime worked on Linux, but if it has got the speed of the "normal" runtime, there might be a lot of people who can use it... _________________ [ Add autocomplete functionality to your VDS IDE windows! ]

If only it were that simple. I did get part of the runtime going under Kylix by hacking out everything that wouldn't compile, but that included all of the dialog stuff. The Borland VCL for Windows is not the same as CLX for LInux, so a VDS Linux implementation would be a major rewrite.
I did get VDS programs running under Wine, which was good enough for my purposes at the time. I no longer need to work on Linux so I don't run it or have any more interest in it.
At the moment, of greater interest is the possibility of VDS for .NET... _________________ The Tech Pro

Wait a second Did Jules say VDS for .NET Now that is something I am very interested in _________________ Home of

It would be awesome if Jules made the VDS runtime into either an ISAPI for IIS or a loadable module for APACHE. I like the Apache idea the best since that is what I am using. _________________ Home of

Honestly, I'd be more interested in VDS for Linux/Unix whatever over
.BLOAT from MS. Even if it's without GUI ability, that would finally allow
me to use VDS on linux based servers for cgi programs like I use to do
on Win32 based servers.

Yep that is what I wanted it for too. Basic CGI and command line console only utilities It would also be nice to make the @lib function load SO files. These are similar to DLL's under Windows. SO stands for Shared Object. _________________ Home of

I would be a seriously happy camper using VDS in *nix systems for cgi

If I could get some sort of VDS running under *nix systems, I'd finally be
able to make more of a commitment to using *nix systems. Right now I
can't because I'm too addicted to VDS and do not have the patience to
learn a new language for the *nix systems.
I'd be willing to pay more just for cgi
ability on *nix systems using VDS!
