hello all

question about Favorites ( what i.e has) i have been trying to think of a way to make a favorites fuction like i.e has but this is not so easy has anyone does this before? any tips you can give me?

not sure if this will help...what about making a link containing the url that you want to save and save the link in a folder?

I think i know what ya mean...not for sure tho but if i recall I.E favorites show the name of the web page you save. then when you click on it it will go to the url...i thought about using a "list" to do this but the problem is i'an not sure how to save the name of the page and the url for that page..

Why not just use IE Favorites files (.url). They are merely text based
files like an ini file.

ok but i'am trying to firgure out how to have vds function like I.E does for favorites...I know what you are saying read the url that i have saved now BUT how do i have it list it and function like I.E does...

note: if i was to save this page now under favorites in I.E it would save it as "forum.vdsworld.com Edit post" but the url is

in which case how would you have vds show it like i.e meaning if i have a "menu" called Favorites in vds i don't want to show the url of the page just the name of the page. however when you click on the name it would GO to that url....i don't know how to make it that way i think i know how to make it work using JUST url BUT that don't help cuase if you like me you will forget what that url is....heheheheh

Ok, I think I follow ya. To have your app open URL files or another file with an extension that you choose is a matter of a registry entry. For this example we'll say .WLK (Web Link). In the ROOT of the registry create a key called .WLK and for the (defaut) set it to "WebLinkFile". Create another key in the ROOT called WebLinkFile and add a subkey Shell\Open\Command and set default to C:\YourProgramPath\Browser.exe %1.

When a file with the extension .WLK is double clicked (or opened with the SHELL command if you list the files in a popup menu) it will open your app and pass the filename and path is the %1 variable. You will then be able to open the file and read and open the URL.

To save your on URL in that file type, just read the URL and save it to a file with the title of the site as the name of the file. I'm not completely sure how to do that offhand, but it should give you a start.

maybe a better way to explain is like when you make a web page you have a link you can have it so the link tells you what the page is...but when you click on the link it takes you to that page...

Ok, Let's try this again. You want your program to use IE favorites the way IE does.... Let's try this:

Get the favorites folder using the registry or the @windir() command from VDS 5. List all the URL files in that folder and show them in a menu, then when the user clicks on a menu item open that URL file, read the URL and go to that website. Is that it? I know this is hard to get people to understand, but, we'll get it.

ok i see what ya mean however i think I.E just stores the url... ( i would have to look..i can't now on work pc) if i just have it be url the problem is after awhile you will have alot of url's and without having the name of the page you will forget what url is what....


p.s once i get home i will check out the registry to see what it has...
