Are you experienced with Linux?

Or is it just PGWARE? Wink

I'm running the latest beta of Knoppix v3.2 and I'm wondering if it's hard to set it up as a server and if it contains Apache at all. I'm pretty green when it comes to the Penguin OS Laughing

Well I'm not Garrett but I'd say that PGWARE for sure is experienced with
Linux. VDSWORLD and numerous other sites are hosted on his servers.
These are some awesome servers. Smile

I'm just a beginner with Linux really. I know enough to get around and enough to keep things somewhat secure. Personally I like RedHat over any of the other Linux OS's out there. Easier to update and apply patches and the support offered by RedHat is really good. As for the servers there all housed at www.rackshack.net but I do have to self manage them - update software, apply patches, etc and Rackshack maintains the hardware and internet connectivity.

alot of the old linux folks seems to like it.
I've tried the Live release an I really like it.
But I'm not sure if it has a server package.

Do you know how to configure Wine?
I can't get any programs to run. just get errors. Sad

SuSE is more for home pc's rather then for a server from what I've seen, the same for Wine. If you are going to run a server at home then you can use SuSE however I really do recommend using a version of Linux without a user interface and just use the shell/command prompt. I know in RedHat a userinterface comes with it but you can choose to not have that as part of the package when installing, most likely the same is for SuSE (I'm not certain).

I really don't recommend running Wine on a server though, it's decent for a desktop but as you have found alot of applications won't work. Real simple programs will work under Wine though. I've never tried to install or configure Wine but I've heard alot about the downside to it and really can't recommend it.

My personal opinion is that Linux is good for servers, it should not try to take over the desktop space. Windows is perfect for the desktop for many reasons. From what I've seen of Linux on the desktop it does nothing more then try to emulate the way Windows appears/works. No reason to use an imitation when you can use the real thing.

I have tried Mandrake and Redhat a few years go, before they started using the KDE interface, I couldn't even mount a disk on them back then Laughing

But now I'm starting to like them. Specially Mandrake and the new interfaces. And the fact that I can choose different ones are cool too.
But I'm never going to leave Windows. Well, maybe for ALOT of money Wink

OK, enough from me on Linux.
Have you heard any more news about VDS? Any set date? Or have more bugs appeared?

tried Redhat, but that was like 3 versions ago. I've got the latest Mandrake
sitting here ready to burn onto 3 cd's, but I keep getting side tracked with
stupid meaningless things like Work! Twisted Evil

You're best bet is to find some newbie linux forums somewhere.
