Yeah I think it's cool like Skit said to see into people's heads without asking
them things
but mostly I think blogging is a waste. I think people who spend hours
reading random peoples' blogs are total idiots. I have better things to do
with my time. _________________ FreezingFire

The problem with printing your inner most thoughts online is that they
can be used against you if anyone ever wanted or needed to.
Sometimes, too much info is dangerous.

I've always been told never to volunteer too much information. As far as
blogging goes, I hadn't heard of it until a few days ago, and from what I've
read I have no use for it either. _________________ Bill Weckel

Per my previous posts, are we not blogging (so to speak) right now?
Again, it is all in the terminology/function... |

I wouldn't consider what we are doing is blogging, blogging came way after forums. Blogs are ripped off stripped down versions of forums and typically have absolutely no BENEFICIAL use other then some guy with an ego problem yapping on about his daily life of drivel.
The problem is the news media had absolutely no stories to talk about so they decided to jump on the wagon about 'bloggers' and how they supposedly are affecting politics and our culture. More media over-sensationalism. The news seems to cause more problems around the world then it actual benefits anyone nowadays. |

How true. I think also that apart from a few celebrity blogs the number of people interested in reading the thoughts of average Joe is tiny, in complete disproportion to the time spent writing them. Someone who blogs = someone with no life, and the same goes for the few people who actually read them. _________________ The Tech Pro

My Sentiments exactly!
As the Father of Teenagers I observe many hours wasted posting to and reading blogs as well as hours spent on instant messenger.
If the information exchanged had some intellectual component or socialy redeeming qualities I would happily encourage it. My observations however indicate otherwise.
Instant messenger is my biggest complaint. Hours spent typing meaningless drivel to the same people they see every day at school!
OK enough complaining, I've been planning a solution! A program (VDS of course) that monitors actual usage and after a pre-determined amount of time on IM begins to pop up "nag" message (like "go read a book" or "is your homework done?" etc..) and eventually terminates and closes all IM windows when the final time is exceeded.
The program will need to get its time reference from the internet (so they can't just set the system time back to gain more time) and accumulate time only when an IM window is "on-top" and they are using the keyboard. If they're using the computer for their homework with IM open in the background I don't have a problem with that, or if they walk away from the computer and leave an IM window up that shouldn't count either (I'm not a total scrooge ya know). I just want to limit the total time spent communicating with IM in a given 24hr period.
After the time expires for a given day any attempt to open an IM session would result in it immediately closing.
Sorry to ramble. If anybody has done anything like this or has some ideas to contribute before I actually sit down and start writing it, please speak up. I'll be happy to post anything I come up with in the Opensource area.

Hi DavidR,
Well said. However...
| Quote: | | As the Father of Teenagers I observe many hours wasted posting to and reading blogs as well as hours spent on instant messenger. |
Might the same be said about us? I know you've all been told you spend too much time on the computer, right? I know I sure have!
At least in my opinion, I think it is better for kids to be spending hours typing (and improving upon reading, writing, and socializing skills) rather than spending hours playing useless (and very violent, I might add!) computer games. Everyone knows that the younger generation is lacking in reading/writing skills. (At least according to current research.)
I think today's young people will grow up being faster readers with better writing skills (and be better able to express themselves through the written language). It's a no-brainer.
As for blogging, I think (like anything) it has its place. Per my previous posts, I think it is most constructive when used as a tool for collaboration. Again, "blogging" can mean different things to different people. Let's all keep and open mind.
There's an audience for everything...
Have a GREAT weekend,
- Boo in Florida |
