you are right in that we do have to vote as it is compulsory for over 18's with a fine if you are caught not voting

australia is also sports mad and they usually pick a saturday when there is "nothing" on such a grand final or grand prix...

this is why they have what is called a postal vote in that you can vote at the post office, also being out of the country is no excuse (up to a point) as they expect you to take the necessary steps to vote before you go overseas or while you are overseas
needless to say that by forcing people to vote you increase what we call donkey votes ie. ballot papers deliberately filled in wrong to null your vote . . . and because there are no names on the ballots, you can't be penalized
